I didn't think it was possible to experience two book hangovers in a span of six hours, but yup, that's exactly what happened when I read The Fire Between High & Lo immediately after finishing The Air He Breathes, both part of author Brittainy Cherry's Elements series. I started the first book in the half past midnight and finished the second one with the sun up at six-thirty in the morning, and even though I haven't gotten a wink of sleep yet and I'm hunched over my laptop on my bed putting together this review, I've still got one heck of a huge grin on my face. You would too if you read two of the most heartrending stories you've come across in a long time. And even though this is the second book in the series, I'm writing my review for The Fire Between High & Lo first because all those emotional highs and lows need to be put together while they're all still very fresh in my head and in my heart.Logan Francis Silverstone and Alyssa Marie Walters were the best of friends before they finally decided to give in to the feelings that they were trying to keep from each other and fell in love when they were just shy of turning eighteen. Their lives seemed to be headed in very different directions; she was the straight A student ready to begin college in the fall, and he had his addictions and believed his dreams would stay as they were. But all it takes is one unplanned event that begins the domino effect that will cause Logan to walk away from the only girl he's ever loved and from the only life he's ever known. It takes five years for them to see each other again, and avoiding one another is easier said than done, especially with his brother and her sister about to tie the knot. He knows the best thing for everyone concerned is for him to keep his distance, but after five years, Logan knows that Alyssa is his one home.
Goodness but did this book put me through the emotional wringer. I was right there with Logan and Alyssa as they were on their own roller coaster ride, and I felt those ups and downs along with them. There were times I was frustrated with Logan and how he was treating Alyssa, but still I cheered them on, because these two so deserved a happily-ever-after. They were each other's first and greatest loves, and they also happened to be one another's one addiction that they would never be cured of. It would have been too easy to have them fall back in each other's arms as soon as Logan returned to True Falls, Wisconsin, so I more than appreciated the route that Brittainy Cherry took with our erstwhile lovers and best friends. There were bumps and detours along the way, but it made for a fantastic literary ride I won't be forgetting anytime soon nor would I even want to if it were possible.
With Logan and Alyssa's second chance love story at the forefront, you would think that that would be more than enough to keep you going, but this was more than about romance. The love that Logan and Kellan, as well as Alyssa and Erika--though to a lesser degree--had as siblings was both touching and inspiring. It's also a key component of what makes this story even better than it already was had the author decided to stick to just focus on Logan and Alyssa. This book was about lovers, best friends, and family; it was about finding hope, earning redemption, and offering absolution. The road we're currently on does not have to be the only road we take, and while going down a different one may lead to dead-ends and even getting lost, you continue with the journey, hoping it'll lead you home. The Fire Between High & Lo resonates long after you're done reading it. Five-plus stars isn't enough.

The Fire Between High Lo edition by Brittainy Cherry Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
I don't know how we skipped this book. But I'm glad we made a U-turn, and read it. We absolutely LOVE B. Cherry. We love every book we've read by her and this was no exception. Logan and Alyssa's story was extremely heartbreaking at times. I was so totally invested in their world at one point, I forgot people were in the room with me. B. Cherry's stories tear your heart to shreds and then mends it back together. Logan was a mess. But who could blame him? I wanted him to win and overcome the never ending obstacles standing in his way. I loved how Alyssa loved, she loved unconditionally without bitterness. Alyssa was a beautiful soul and just what Logan needed. I loved Logan. I loved Alyssa. But again, with any B. Cherry story, the supporting characters shined bright as well. Kellan and Erika were adorbs. I would love more of their story. I really enjoyed this one. I can not wait to meet B. Cherry in Vegas. Fangirling on 100!!!!

This. Story. Tore. Me. Apart. I loved Alyssa and Logan. Their connection was so unexpected, but so genuine and real. I was immediately drawn into them and rooting for their success. They had to face so many obstacles, but were always there for each other until they weren't... and even then, they were connected. There was a moment where I had to take a break from reading solely because I couldn't read through my tears. I literally texted Natasha that this book was too real. There were sweet and innocent moments. There were heart breaking, devastatingly painful moments. There were hot and sexy moments. There were light moments full of laughter and heavy moments full of fear and rage. This story was real life in its rawest form. I cannot wait to meet the woman who put these words to paper!

Not a favorite and I won't read again but parts were cute. Certain things annoyed me just a bit. Alyssa, Sadie, Kellan, and Logan all used the word "legit" in a fairly close span of time. Not a big deal at all, and yes, in most cases it's normal to pick up phrases or words that your friends and family use (though Sadie was just a random extra that turned out to be something else further into the story), but it seemed like the author's vocabulary was coming out in her characters thoughts and phrases (possibly, or maybe she just likes how it sounds - if so then it's just a new pet peeve of mine).
A lot of this book was depressing. In a way that's good, because it makes it more "real". There is a lot of pain and hardship in the world. For me, reading is about escaping reality for a while, but I get the point of all the negative stuff. Logan and Alyssa have BOTH mommy and daddy issues, and for good reason. Their parents are abhorrent. In fact, I'm going to go ahead and say that the parents in this book won the silver medal in the 'most horrible parents that ever lived' olympics. In the thousands and thousands of books I've read over my lifetime there are only a couple more despicable parents that what these characters had.
Things get a bit spoiler-ish from here. You've been warned.
A lot of bad stuff happens addiction (more than one character in more than one way), teen pregnancy, loss of said pregnancy, a crappy job because of the before-mentioned pregnancy, violence, desperation, and cancer. Yes, we were even given cancer to deal with. And again, I get that sometimes life just keeps knocking you down and you have to keep pushing forward, but it was a bit hard to take, especially since I really liked the character who was diagnosed.
Alyssa came off as wayyyyyyy too desperate. Partly this stems from the daddy issues, but it seemed to be her personality in general. Leaving a guy messages for FIVE YEARS without getting any response (and by the way - who doesn't change their number for one reason or another in five years???? - I know I'm being nit picky so I'll stop), makes her come off as a major push-over. There was no true anger expressed at the abandonment. The hurt that was caused by that - it just wouldn't be as easy to get over for many people. At least there was some closure to the five-year messaging situation towards the end.
I also thought there was a way too much of this
I shrugged.
She shrugged.
I laughed.
She laughed.
I parted my lips.
She parted her lips.
I leaned in.
She leaned in.
Just didn't do it for me. Once would have been cute I guess but it lost it's charm quick.
Last complaint - like so many other books, when Alyssa lost her virginity it was completely unrealistic. I'm not saying it's impossible to enjoy a first time, especially with someone you feel so comfortable with the way Alyssa and Logan did. And I absolutely hated that I knew she would get pregnant before it was even hinted at, just by the way the book was going.
What I did like was how the story spanned over a significant amount of time. There were a few laughs and the story was well-thought-out.
I would read this authors other work, but I'd be very choosy and download samples first.
