“Once upon a time there was a girl, and there was a wolf.” (Cartwright).Red Riding Hood will take you on an enchanting journey in to a village haunted by a wolf. It is full of danger, passion, and betrayal. This retelling will feel like the true story of Little Red Riding Hood. It is both a lighthearted and Gothic faerie tale.
The Plot: Valerie and her sister, Lucie, have grown up knowing that, once a month, a sacrifice must be made to the wolf to keep the village safe. By Valerie’s 17th year she is used to the tradition and pays it no more attention, until her dear sister is found slaughtered by the wolf. Chaos ensues in the village as suspicions rise. Who is the wolf? Is it Valerie’s child hood friend, Peter, who returned to the village after 10 years? Is it grandmother? Whomever the wolf’s human form is, it can talk to Valerie, and it wants to take her with it.
I have read the negative reviews for this book and I have to say that I disagree with them. I loved this tale. Yes, it is predicable, and yes, if you have seen the movie you don’t need to read the book. But Red Riding Hood is an enchanting faerie tale, and faerie tales are meant to be whimsical and subjective. This retelling feels like it is the real tale of Little Red and the Wolf. It has a great story, well written characters, and magical and horrific details that add depth to the tale.
I loved the character of Valerie. Valerie is meant to be our Little Red and she is perfect. She is strong and caring, and knows that she is not your “typical girl”. She fights for what she believes in and stays true to her heart.
“Even at age seven, she knew that, somehow, she was different from the other villagers.” (Cartwright, p.3).
Henry is our beloved “good-hearted” character of the tale. He is soft spoken, kind, and caring. He is brave, but timid all at once. He is handsome and rich, and sought after by all the girls in the village.
“He was lanky and dashing, with cropped hair and a relaxed smile.” (Cartwright, p. 30).
Peter is the intriguing, dark, mystery man of the book. He has a gloomy past and has a strong connection to Valerie, even after years of being away from the village. He is brooding and handsome, and lends a sense of doubt to Valerie and the story.
“He looked wild and haunted, wearing all black, like a horse that could not be tamed.” (Cartwight, p. 39).
Yes, this one has a bit of a love triangle, and it is mildly predictable, but it is also full of twists. It is a magnificent, otherworldly retelling of a classic, beloved faerie tale. For those who have not seen the movie, I will always recommend this for a quick, whimsical read. For those who have, it is still a recommended read for those who enjoy faerie tales.
“And yet, she could feel something behind her, approaching.” (Cartwright, p. 328).

Red Riding Hood Sarah BlakleyCartwright David Leslie Johnson Books Reviews
I think red riding hood is a wonderful book but I would only recommend it to those who like violence romance mystery and horror these are the best words to describe the book. As much as I liked the book it was short and it made me go on line to finish the rest of the book which was annoying the book was pretty decent written but lacked good vocabulary but I thought the end had a great twist the book definitely had some Gore in the part where the wolf attacked the village. But over all I give the book a 3 star ratting
Book came as promised. No problems.
Not worth your time. I wish I could get my money back.
I was so excited about the movie that I went ahead and purchased the book. It's one of the few times I did not read the reviews... stupid me. I can't believe they are charging this much for a book with no ending. The writing was fair but to not include an ending for the price I paid... I'm so flippin mad. How can they justify the price for a book without an ending?!?! If the people behind this book were trying to sell movie tickets well they just lost a potential fan with this BS. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT !!!!
Very ANGRY about this book not being finished! You have to wait until after the movie comes out before you get to read the ending on the Internet!?! I like to share books & reread them. I want a refund because I feel like this should have been printed in large writing on the cover of the book before I bought it! That or anyone who purchases the book gets an updated copy after the movie is released. What happens if this becomes a regular thing? Must we skip forward and read the endings first to see if they are complete? There is something very wrong about this.
Now, besides being angry about the ending...the book is very hauntingly written. Beautifully done. Very rich characters that you fall in love with. Keeps you guessing to the very end...AND BEYOND!
I normally don't write reviews, but I really think that everyone's voice should be heard regarding the fact that the end of the book is torn out, relatively speaking. I think that it was very wrong to write this book with no intention of there being an ending. I really feel that I wasted my hard-earned money on this incomplete peice of...work (?). I will not purchase another item from this author. If the author thought that readers would enjoy the suspense or clamor for more, she was sorely mistaken because now I just don't care what happened and it had turned me off of seeing the movie as well. I certainly hope other authors won't follow suit with this unsatisfactory line of...writing (?).
I read this prior to seeing the movie, which influenced my perception of the movie. It was a very quick read, and pretty interesting. The writing is not too bad, but obviously geared more to the young adult crowd (which I'm not). It's an interesting take on the fairy tale, and the action moves along pretty quickly. This electronic edition is missing the ending, but there is a link at the end of the story that takes you right to the last chapter online (I use the app on my iPad to read books). It was a surprise ending for me, as the wolf turned out to be someone I had not expected. In comparison to the movie, the book is much better. The movie moved too quickly in the first half, and the acting was very choppy until Gary Oldman arrived and apparently influenced the other actors to improve their acting. But as far as the book is concerned, if you've seen the movie the book will give you a little more background on the story and help explain some holes that were left in the movie.
