The Gift Julie Garwood 9780671702502 Books

I love Julie Harwood books. I loved the first 2 books in this series. I just could NOT like this one as much as the first 2.

PROS: I just love, love Nathan. I couldn't wait for his story. Here's a man trying to build something with his life. He goes to claim his bride that he married at 14 to get the money from the marriage contract.

CONS: Sara killed the story. She's whiny, cries alot and has this superior attitude. Whenever she does something she expects the crew and her husband to shower her with praise. Gag. She blames everyone for her mistakes...example a crew man fell down the stairs after tripping over HER parasol. She's sorry but she says he should have been looking where he was going. WHAT?! She expects Nathan to take care of her and to fix every problem she has. The man is trying to command his ship and keep everyone safe. I enjoyed everyone else but her.

I listened to the audiobook. I had no issues with the narrator but I couldn't finish. Sara just got to me.

The Gift Julie Garwood 9780671702502 Books Reviews

The Gift by Julie Garwood has always been one of my favourite historical romance novels. I haven't re-read it in years and when friends decided a Julie Garwood buddy read was in order, The Gift was chosen.

We are introduced to Nathan at the age of fourteen and Sara at the age of four. The daft King decided to stop the feuding between each of their families by joining the young couple in marriage. Sara's family are despicable and throughout the story we see them at their worst. Nathan's is not much better, but they are loyal. When the couple finally come together to live as man and wife, it's not all plain sailing.

I loved this couple. Sara is an absolute crack up. Her naive outlook on life and her unquestionable faith in her husband is sweet. Nathan is a gruff and impatient man who wants the contract fulfilled without his emotions getting involved. Their journey is filled with rough seas and dastardly parasols, but Sara's positive outlook and Nathan's determination help them survive the storms.

Julie Garwood is one of the most brilliant historical romance authors and her stories always leave me with a smile on my face. She brings her characters to life and makes you fall in love with them. This was a great reminder to step back in time more regularly and enjoy the fun, excitement, sexy times and adventure that a good historical romance provides.
The plot was basically a good one but the whole of it just didn't do it for me. The heroine was an immature, clueless ditz. Although I liked the hero for the most part, his dealings with her dangerous stupidity just didn't make any sense to me. The final straw to me was her, and the entire crew going along with it, convincing the hero to let the pirates go.

Although the heroine was sweet, I prefer a heroine to have more common sense and maturity to go along with the sweetness. She was just too childish in her behaviors and thought processes. She was also constantly bursting into tears. Quite annoying.

I have thoroughly enjoyed a number of Julie Garwood's books but this one was not her best.
My least favorite of all the Julie Garwood books I've read to date. I was excited to read this book because I loved the first two Crown Spies novels. This was a let down. I liked Nathan from Guardian Angel. And the female leads in the series thus far had been very strong independent women. Sara was not at all like those women. She is needy, idiotic, and weak. She definitely comes across like a child which is sad when you think about the content. Nathan also came off as less than appealing. He's harsh and heavy handed. Also, a person pet peeve- I cannot stand it when the male characters are physical with the women such as pulling hair and man handling. I'm so disappointed. Lion's Lady was by far the best book. This doesn't live up to it. It has felt like a homework assignment just to make it through this book.
I understand the author's intention of having Lady Sara feeling that she must depend solely on her husband, Nathan, to always protect her. But it just galled me that she was such a weak, needy woman, crying over everything. Perhaps that's how it would have been in this era; however, the fact that their friends said she was exactly what her pirate husband needed, and how perfect they were for each other, was an absolute farce. The story line states that Nathan initially only wanted the inheritance that came with his bride (and that's why he kept her around), but he eventually falls in love with her. I just find that ridiculous. I loved the first book in this series (in fact, I couldn't put it down). The second book was pretty good, too, but I dreaded reading this book. I almost gave up halfway through it, but I paid the ridiculously high price for it and wanted to try and get my money's worth. As to whether I'll be reading book 4, I'll really have to think about that.
