I've been looking for a new series to immerse myself in, but Butcher's ain't going to be it. Her style and narrative structure just don't work for me. It's POV whiplash, a pet peeve of mine.In the first 15% of the ebook, the point of view shifts between six different characters--Helen the heroine, Drake the hero, Logan the inhumanly beautiful vampire ally, Thomas the other Theronai warrior, Zach another Theronai warrior, and Lexi, the mysterious friend on the run. And I've just listed the characters, not the number of times the point of view shifts among them during these pages. Just when I start to become the slightest bit intrigued with what's going on, POV abruptly shifts to someone, somewhere else. Very frustrating. The momentum of the plot is broken, and characterization suffers. To me, it feels like rushed world-building and character-introducing. I pass.

Burning Alive The Sentinel Wars Shannon K Butcher 9780451412713 Books Reviews
Got this solely because I needed a new series and a book on the 4 for 3 plan. Gotta say the concept is really great, the story line is entertaining, BUT I have to say I scanned about 5-8% of the book when it got so boring. The near mind numbing self doubt here gets old after you have to read about it a dozen or more times. The action was better than many but something was just lacking a bit. The reviews I read for the next books in the series seem to indicate this series gets better. It is not going to become my favorite when it pales in comparison to Kresley Cole or J R Ward (Fallen Angels not included) but I have high hopes for this series. I scanned a lot of Lord of the Rings when I read it so obviously not the indicator of a bad story ) There are several sub-plots here that are not fleshed out and you are left hanging for a sequel which I will only let go for about 1 more book before I stop buying them because I don't like to be subjected to marketing in lieu of good writing. Give this one a chance and probably at least 1 more, the story I really wish to read unfortunately is in Book 3 so I might have to hang in at least that long but she needs to resolve a few things in the next book or 2 or I add it to my "could have been great" list of failed series (like almost anything of Anita Blake after book 10).
Bottom line I gave it 4 stars for the story potential this series has, as a stand alone it is a 3. Good story, original world creation, too much left for following books, I don't mind cliff hangers for the next book but this one left about 4 or more unresolved story lines. Too many great series out there to waste too much time, next 2 books will decide if it makes my "buy this" list.
Good story. Finally something a little different. There's these Sentinenals warriors who are at war with the Synestryn demons. The demons come out at night in search of blood so they eat people and wreak havoc along the way. Their ultimate goal is to find a way in to an alternate world where a race of superior beings can supply them with their unique blood and make them all powerful. Then, there will be no stopping them.
Then there are the Sentinels whose women were all but wiped out many years ago and their men are sterile and dying. No women, no children. What a sad lonly existence. Their lifespan is told by the tree tattooed on their bodies. When the last leaf falls from the tree, they're nearing the end of their life. Their bodies collect energy during their lifespan and without their other half to help release the energy, they stay in constant physical pain and lonliness until they're soul dies, then their body.
There were some good characters. Look out for Sybil. She's a huge suprise. Helen and Drake weren't the best pair of leading lovers I've read about, but they did alright. Once again, the female protagonist, Helen, is written on the weak, fragile, soft side. Of course she has devastating background that keeps her from reaching her full potential. I didn't particularly care for her without Drake. They did burn up sheets a time or two.
Now her friend, Levi, a fiery little mystery, who was barely in this story, I bet will stand up to the task and take on the big bad guys like a pro. I'm sure her story will be told. There's a spicy Sentinel after her already.
The story takes place over a three day period. So much happened in three days but story had a few lulls that caused me to skim the pages some. A lot of repeating of thoughts going on.
This story is worthy of a 3.5 rating. This is the 1st I've read from this author. I'll pick her up again.
