The Second Cataclysm The Cult of Yex Saga Book 1 eBook Jason F Smith C Parker Garlitz

I gotta say, I absolutely LOVED this book and am stoked for the rest of the series. I have been devouring fantasy series lately (Dark Tower by Steven King, A Song of Ice & Fire by George RR Martin, Night Angel by Brent Weeks, and just starting the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb.) Basically I finished Dark Tower series about a year ago with my mind absolutely blown thinking nothing could ever suck me in like that did, but then I started ASOIAF and was once again completely immersed. When I got to the end I was so devastated that the next book wasn't out yet, so I got on Google and searched "what the heck should I read while I wait for the next ASOIAF book??" That's where I came across the Night Angel and Fareseer Trilogies, and ultimately a referral to the Cult of Yex Saga as well. LONG STORY SHORT, Dark Tower and ASOIAF are absolutely epic series that I adore, however I have a few complaints about them, which fortunately are not the case with Cult of Yex:

1) Dry Spells (more so in Dark Tower than ASOIAF) there are definitely some dry stretches that I had to force myself thru, and some bizarre story lines at times that even seemed odd in a fantasy series.

2) Untimely Deaths (more so in ASOIAF than Dark Tower) sort of a spoiler alert, but it doesn't take long in the series to learn that Martin is totally comfortable killing off characters. I am fine with that, but the frustrating thing is that there is a ton of time spent building up story lines that end abruptly without conclusion because the characters involved are killed! I suppose that is more like real life, but still...is it too much to ask to see a freaking Stark kill a Lannister?? =)

3) Language: both series are a little to comfortable with what I consider unnecessary vulgar language. You can make a character seem filthy, awful, sexist and deplorable without having to use the "C-Word" in every conversation.

So, circling back to Cult of Yex, the story was captivating and suspenseful, much like these other series there is a cluster of characters that are followed, the authors are super creative with foreshadowing and how they jump a little bit forward and backward in time (very cleverly done and they use more than one technique to do it - hard to explain, but you will find that it is not confusing at all), it has great character development that really helps you understand and connect with them but the story is so well-planned with so much relevant detail going on that it actually moves quite fast (enough to keep the attention even of younger viewers) and although there is certainly a fair share of death and destruction, there is not any offensive vulgarity.

COMPLAINTS: My only complaints about it are some typos and grammatical errors, but I know this is an early release so I took the liberty of noting the errors I saw and sending them to the author (you can see his blog and Twitter accounts on the Author page here on Amazon.) He was very grateful to receive my free/unofficial editorial review, so that was cool.

All in all, I am really looking forward to seeing how this plays out, and if the rest of the series follows suite then I can totally see this with a silver screen adaptation. The characters are likable, the story is creative, and I think it has broad mass appeal. I would be comfortable with my kids reading this, but I certainly wouldn't consider the writing to be targeting young viewers specifically. Just a great job overall, I will be referring friends and family.

The Second Cataclysm The Cult of Yex Saga Book 1 eBook Jason F Smith C Parker Garlitz Reviews

Garlitz and Smith weave a fantastic tale that captures the readers imagination from the beginning. This is the start of a great series of books that will leave you wanting more and I recommend this as a must read read for all lovers of fantasy.
What great characters! The world is vivid and alive, and a welcome place to spend hours reading in.
4.5* effort and at the price such a good value. Great characters, pacing and plot. Highly recommended.
Old school, unapologetic, epic fantasy. It takes me back to the days when I'd stay up half the night reading Dragonlance or Icewind Dale. I can't wait for the next installment.
Imagine a gripping, fast-paced, action-packed mystery novel encased in a delightful, magical fantasy shell -- that's what you get with Second Cataclysm. Garlitz and Smith know how to move a story with a speed and fluidity that is lost on most novelists. Dive head first into this complex story and meet characters you'll love -- and some you'll hate -- and you will NOT be disappointed.
Great start to a series. I was skeptical at first, because well, I'm pretty much skeptical of the quality of anything I read nowadays, but this book won out. Very fun read, good high fantasy, and it doesn't suffer from pretension like more well-known fantasies do these days.
Second Cataclysm is a great novel. Smith and Garlitz are great story tellers. Second Cataclysm does a phenomenal job setting the stage for a truly epic tale. This book introduces us to many great characters. Garlitz and Smith take their time to give us the back story which provides a window into their character and their journeys.

Garlitz and Smith are masters of painting scenes and characters with intricate details without taking away from the momentum of the story. I felt like I was there with the characters in Demon’s Bluff. I could see it, taste it, feel it, breathe it, smell it. Every detail.

The story-telling truly is masterful here. The authors do a great job weaving the stories of each of the 4 main characters together. Not only does this book have exciting action sequences, but it lays the framework for some great themes that will no doubt be unfolded over the next installments to come.

The characters in this story are very well done. I connected with each of them on an emotional level. They are so human. Their motives and actions were truly authentic.

I loved this book! And the best part is that it is just the first installment in what I’m sure will prove to be a remarkable story. Can’t wait for the next installment!
