The sole problem was the editing of what would, and in other formats IS a wonderful story. It would appear that this version was scanned in using letter recognition- and that just plain failed. Especially with this story where so many of the words are 'foreign'. The publisher, or failing that, Amazon needs to regroup, re-edit, and re-issue this ebook! I am very familiar with the story and there were some places where I had to pause & think about which word was meant to be - not what was actually printed. A complete shame as it is the only mar on an otherwise wonderful, complex, and fascinating story. This is one of CJ Cherryh's books that gets me to look at the world from a very different perspective.

Some people construct clocks. Others the Law. But only C.J. Cherryh has the special talent to construct Aliens. Anthropomorphic aliens, feline aliens, alien aliens, whatever C.J. Cherryh constructs oozes of plausibility and believability. I think she could even pull off little green men if she tried.

In the Faded Sun Kesrith, the Mistress of Aliens is giving us one of the most emblematic species in science fiction the Mri, born of dystopias and the dark between the stars.

The Mri are Warriors, space mercenaries, hired by another alien species, the exotic and rather repulsive Regul. At the same time, the Mri are a dying species. The first novel (and the next two that follow) is the swan song of the Mri helping a human man up, in fact making him to mri up, seducing him into their own bizarre world.

The omnibus edition of the Faded Sun trilogy is greatly recommended, because it is virtually impossible to leave this strange world of C.J. Cherryh’s once you enter it. Like the human Kel Duncan, you will find yourself wanting more and more of the secretive golden skin, golden eyed Mri.
this is one of the best writers of science fiction/fantasy of her generation (and possibly of all time) creating an master-piece. really, the whole Alliance-Union universe is masterfully done. but this trilogy is a standout. Cherryh's skill with creating complex and very old cultures that seem, at once, alien and very plausible is beyond compare. In this trilogy she has, not only, future human command structures and behaviors to deal with but also two separate (and very different) alien races who have had a long history of working together before humans come into the picture.

it is an absolute feast of imaginative and intellectual virtuosity. the story is captivating from start to finish. worthy of Herbert or Clarke or any of the established greats. indeed, it is a shame that Cherryh is not more broadly known for the living master that she is. we have much to learn from her.

the only critique is that this version of the book is rather poorly copy-edited. that is, there were little grammar and tense and spelling issues all throughout the book. it seems like maybe this kindle edition was made from some draft that was not quite vetted in the rush to digitize it? i have a copy of the omnibus in hardcover and i don't recall (yea, though it has been over a decade since i read it) it being so rife with errors. while they don't make reading impossible, every time one comes across an obvious error one is kind of kicked out the reading experience by having to correct for whatever the error is.

it might behoove the publisher to look into this.
I'm giving this five stars, despite the poor editing. I'll get back to that later. Cherryh is in her element with the Faded Sun Trilogy, creating absolutely believable alien races, characters and environments. I have to admit that I've been obsessed with her Foreigner series for years, enjoying the action packed, political intrigue as well as the fully realized characters. The Faded Sun predates Foreigner by some time, but it contains many of the same elements. It might almost have been a blueprint, following Duncan's journey as he learns to adapt to life with the mri and essentially, become one with this alien race. Faded Sun is slower than Foreigner, with more contemplation and less action, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It allows CJC to explore the relationships between the various elements on individual characters, four races engaged in some complex maneuvering for freedom and power, and the uses of violence among and between these individuals. As long as you don't go into it expecting space opera shoot-em-ups, and are willing to take a nice deep breath before sitting down to enjoy the book, it's a great read.
However, and this is a big however, it shares the common flaw of many books converted from hard copy to ebook format. There are scads of misplaced punctuation, missing punctuation, mispelled words that would be obvious to a third grader, if anyone bothered to actually edit the text. This is not only annoying, as it disrupts the narrative, and therefor the reader's enjoyment, it is irresponsible. Penguin is selling us converted text without taking the care required to make it readable, and that's just bad customer service. I wish there were some way to enforce a ban on this careless attitude, but so far, I haven't come up with an answer, except to ask to insist on better quality product from its sellers. Please, . Do something about the rash of badly edited ebooks.

To summarize, this is a great story, told with wonderful world building and well developed characters, over three full-length novels. Excellent books, badly edited, but ot so badly that they can't be enjoyed.
