There is nothing more that I hate than reading a novel that has incredibly loose connections to the characters/events of the forthcoming book/movie. This is not one of those books. Prominent characters are featured, to include John Connor, Kate Connor, Kyle Reese and his childhood friend Star, and the A-1 pilot Blair Williams. All characters listed are featured in this novel and will be featured in the upcoming movie.

It is an intense and fascinating novel penned by Timothy Zahn, a bestselling author known primarily for his Star Wars novels. Zahn is a fabulous writer and tells an incredible story about the Resistance's fight against Skynet in Los Angeles. The setting is a little more than 10 years after Judgment Day; John and Kate Connor have formed the Resistance fighting against T-1s (seen in Terminator 3), T-600s (prototype of the widely known T-800 model, aka the Schwarzenegger model) and Hunter Killers, or flying machines. You will also meet a young Kyle Reese and his friend Star in the days before they join the Resistance.

I haven't read this novel in a while, but I'll convey the pros & cons as much as possible. First, I purchased this novel in anticipation for the movie. I'm a huge believer in continuity, & when someone messes up major details (e.g. dates in movies/novels), it's naturally upsetting. The story is pretty good & gives the reader a sense that its characters are in it for survival. Keep in mind this novel is a prequel & does not follow "Salvation."

I was able to imagine people scourging for food & weapons more so in this novel than I ever did in the actual movie. The movie suffers from bad editing, & the ending just plain sucks. Why am I mentioning the movie? Well, because I think I've lost all faith in the franchise; this novel was the last good effort to revive Terminator. Purchase this novel & you won't be disappointed, but rent the movie. No, I do not own "Salvation" on video ;)
I am 150 pages into the book and find that it is well written with a good plot and interesting character development. Typical Timothy Zahn fashion each chapter ends with the reader wanting more; making it hard to put down. I bought it with interest in the upcoming movie and having read books by the author before. This is the first Terminator book I have read and probably wouldn't have picked this one up if it was written by another author. So far it seems to fit with the first three movies.

To no fault of the book, I still have a hard time understanding how the fabric of the TV show stitches in with any of the movies or the book.

We get introduced to all the primary characters in the film, John and Kate Connor, Barnes and Blair, a young Kyle Reese.

Two threads here Connor's group has a plan to take a staging area for Skynet intact and a building that had been surviving in the ruins for years is about to be assaulted by a band of Terminators. Hundreds of men, women, and children. Connor tries to help them as well.

Nicely addition to the Terminator series.
Since John Connor was not in the military when Judgement Day happened, I wondered how he "officially" became part of the Resistance. In this book they give the answer. By surviving an operation against Skynet that should have meant the destruction of his entire cell. The story is fairly well written. I didn't notice any major issues with messing up on equipment or military areas, beyond how much an individual soldier can carry and how much stuff actually weighs. Trust me on this one, a soldier will not be carrying around multiple heavy machine guns or more than 2 cases of ammo, let alone both those things at the same time. The author should have looked into that one. Other than that it is a good book that adds to the storyline.
